EA Louse Says, Good Day Sir!

Today an anonymous writer claiming to be a disgruntled employee of Mythic Entertainment, EA subsidiary and component of BioWare, posted a blog airing every piece of dirty laundry he could come up with about the failure of Mythic’s Warhammer Online. Most of his blog wouldn’t interest non-WAR fans, however, he also had some disparaging things to say about Star Wars: The Old Republic. Read on.

Here is what he had to say about SWTOR:

“And Bioware? Don’t make me laugh. They’ve spent more money making the Old Republic than James Cameron spent on Avatar. *** you not. More than $ 300 million! Can you believe that?

And you know what they’re most proud of? This is the kicker. They are most proud of the sound. No seriously. Something like a 20Gig installation, and most of it is voiceover work. That’s the best they have. The rest of the game is a joke. EA knows it and so does George Lucas, they’re panicking , and so most of Mythic has already been cannibalized to work in Austin on it because they can’t keep pushing back launch.

Old Republic will be one of the greatest failures in the history of MMOs from EA. Probably at the level of the Sims Online. We all know it too ….”

Now anyone who reads the entire blog, which I recommend, can’t help but take everything he says with a grain of salt. He is clearly a disgruntled employee lashing out at what he perceives as a hostile work environment. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean what he says isn’t true. A couple of the pieces of information in his brief rant do not surprise me and in fact mimic things we have said ourselves. $300 million in cost, we all expected this to be the most expensive game ever made. 20gb install? We also joked early on about BioWare’s need to invent new compression to be able to house all of the hours of recorded dialogue. So, if we can take these as fact, we become nervous to consider that anything else he says might be true as well.

“The rest of the game is a joke.

Has EA really shipped the Mythic people to BioWare so that they can meet their launch deadline? Has this project dissolved into something that both EA and Lucas are afraid will become a failure? I watched in horror as I followed WAR; that game was pushed out the door too quickly and failed because of it. If SWTOR is anywhere near as bad as EA Louse spells it out to be, we are in for either a few more pushbacks, a terrible game, or both. One thing that must be noted is that, in the comments section of his post, he mentioned Sanya Weathers, the women who was developing Dawn of Camelot, and the circumstances of her depature from Mythic. Although she could not comment on much, she did dispute what he said about her on her own blog, which does raise some questions about EA Louse’s legitimacy, or at least the accuracy of his understanding of events within the company.

Thanks for the… many… links. (If mine is the only blog you read, the blog in question is here.)

As practically everyone knows, I have a binding contract that says I cannot talk about What Really Happened to me. [My lawyer reminds me: It says right here that what really happened was that we mutually agreed to separate, and every time that I’ve been asked since then, I have said we mutually agreed to separate.] I also cannot say anything about EA, anyone still working at EA, or any product now or ever developed by EA that might be “disparaging.” The only thing I can say, as a matter of fact, is that the contract exists.
However, I am allowed to say what didn’t happen.

I can’t comment on the Louse’s actual post. But in the comment section, someone asked what happened to me, and the Louse responded:

Wow, Sanya. That was a long time ago.
Yeah, that was actually not Rob Denton. That was her having a fierce, loud fight with Mark Jacobs about forum postings. Sanya had a very hard line stance on developers posting on the boards.

That’s… not what happened. At all.
